draws heavily on his own life. He had experience. of fishing in the Cuban waters and
like the ole man he was also a fan of baseball. He worked for the Red Cross during
the First World War and was injured by shrapnel when he was in Italy, Hemingway
always talks about the need to struggle against defeat or death and how
determination and endurance can help one to win in this struggle. The old man is at
the end of the novel very near death, but we know that the story of his suffering
and loss will live on in the memories of the people of his village. Ultimately his story
becomes one of triumph because the tales of his life will live on even after his
death. The novel was published in 1952, when people were trying to recover from
the mass destruction wrought by the tow world wars, and this tale of endurance
and ultimate triumph immediately struck a chord with the readers.
Writing Style : Hemingway's language is simple and pithy. He mostly writes in short

Title poet Rhyme scheme Figure of speech Theme or centeral idea
All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
And one man in his time plays and parts,
His acts being seven ages, At first, the infant,
mewling and puking in the nurse's arms.
Then the whining schoolboy, with his satchel
and shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school. And then the lover,
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow. Then a soldier,
Full of strange oaths and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
In fair round belly with good capon lined.
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut.
Full of wise saws and modern instances ;
And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
Into the lean and slippered pantaloon ,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank, and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion,
Sans teeth, sans eyes, Sans taste, sans everything
- William Shakespeare

Dear coach,
Thanks for the special gifts that you have given to my child. You learned his name
and spoke it often. You taught him the basics of the sport as well as special ways to
improve and excel. Although you had a whole team of kids to mentor, you took time
for individual instruction where needed.
Under your care i have watched him transform form a timid, doubting child to a
strong, happy player willing to give his all for the team. Throughout the season
when he gave his best, even though it was not quite good enough to gain his best,
even though it was not quite good enough to gain that extra point, you recognized
his contribution with a pat on the back and encouraging words.
Your wise approach showed him that, although wining is a goal, there are other
goals just as worthy. He learned the value of finishing what he started and the joy of
personal accomplishment. These attributes carried him through a season that was
full of hard work and fun, discouragement and resolve, defeat and victory.
And, at the very end, at that championship meet when he brought home the fist-
place medal, you were among those who were so very proud of how far he had
come. It was a victory for all of us. What amazes me is you 've taught them skills that
will last a lifetime. You've kindled in them a desire to excel. It may be that none of us
